On 6th October 2011, the Small Medium Enterprise of Australia officially launched. From its conception, its focus has been on helping small and medium-sized business owners and entrepreneurs conduct business physically as well as virtually across Australia.

Membership in SMEA is open to Australian business owners of any size. There are two membership options available:

  • Complimentary SMEA Community Membership and,

  • Paid SMEA VIP Membership.

Our People


Craig West

Executive Chairman

Craig West is a strategic accountant who has over 20 years’ experience advising business owners. His practice Succession Plus is the largest advisory business in Australia focused on Business Succession and Exit Planning and now has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth and provides mentoring, advice and strategy for clients looking to prepare their business for a successful exit. Craig is the President of the Australian Chapter of The Exit Planning Institute and is currently working on a Ph.D. in Business Succession and Exit Planning.


Mark Flack


Mark Flack has previously been involved in the growth of several businesses in Australia. He has founded and operated software development businesses and professional services firms. Throughout his diverse career, he has been exposed to a range of industry sectors, and experienced first hand many of the challenges that small and medium businesses face in their attempt to grow and transition into public companies. He has held operational and board positions with both NSX and ASX listed companies.


Ben Fewtrell


Ben Fewtrell is a keynote speaker, master coach and entrepreneur who has helped many businesses understand what they need to do to achieve their ultimate goals. He started ActionCOACH ANZ in 2005 and has since focussed on understanding the problems business owners face and provide education and guidance to help overcome them. Ben has contributed to national publications such as Business Resource, Lifestyle Magazine, and Virgin’s In-Flight Magazine. He has also featured in “The Secrets of Top Business Builders Exposed” by Dale Beaumont.

John Peterson


For more than 26 years, John has assisted more than 3,000 SME’s across five countries including Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia & the Middle East. Nationally, John is regarded by more than 500 x Accountants and their clients as Australia’s most effective business coach and mentor. John Peterson is the founding Director of The Best Practice Program. John sits on a number of advisory boards and The Best Practice Business School is the education partner of choice of Master Builders Association of Victoria and the Café Association of Australia. John is also co-founder of Cashflow Momentum, a revolutionary cashflow improvement system for small business owners helping them move away from the cashflow cliff edge.


Gai Comans

Client/Staff Retention Expert

With over 20 years’ experience in senior executive roles, Gai has led strategic business transformation and people transition strategies in highly dynamic environments within the financial service sector. Gai’s experience with client and staff acquisition and retention has formed the foundation for the implementation of sustainable business growth strategies. As Head Of Retention for one of Australia’s major banks, Gai was accountable for addressing the customer attrition issue. Gai led the strategic redesign and implementation across the organisation, which resulted in a reduction of customer attrition by 14 percent and growth of $1.4 billion. Subsequently, the strategy and processes were adopted as best practice across the industry.


Sal Carrero

Online Marketing Expert

Sal has established and built several highly successful businesses and held roles including Sales Director, Marketing Director and Group CEO. His knowledge of digital marketing, email marketing, search engine optimisation, social media and database management is considerable and Sal’s expertise is widely sought-after in the industry. A powerhouse of practical and effective ideas for business marketing. Sal is generous in sharing information that helps businesses engage more strongly with their desired target market.

Sal is a Marketing Consultant to SMEA and will be a huge asset to our members.


Julie Dolan

SMSF Specialist

Julie is the Managing Director of SMSF Blueprint and has had over 22yrs experience in the accounting, advisory, superannuation & wealth management industry. This has allowed her deep exposure and experience to many facets of the industry. Throughout her career, a core element and skill set has been Self Managed Superannuation Funds and the technical and strategic application of the relevant laws and legislation. For many years she has provided detailed and high level strategic/technical support and consulting services to hundreds of Accountants, Advisers and Lawyers around Australia as well as to thousands of SMSF Trustees. She also regularly writes for industry magazines and speaks at events to professionals and trustees on strategic opportunities available to SMSF’s.

Mario Cuenca


Mario Cuenca is the founder and Managing Director of Emjay Insurance Brokers – a boutique brokerage specialising in comprehensive insurance and risk solutions for businesses across various industries and professions since 1986. Well known and respected throughout the insurance industry, Mario is recognised for his leadership, professionalism, business insight, and client focus, as well as his contribution to mentoring the next generation of insurance professionals. Always one to give back, Mario and the Emjay team are the proud organisers of the Emjay Golf Day. The Golf Day is an annual event that brings the insurance industry together to raise funds for Communities Assist – a charity that works to improve the economies and welfare of communities in Sub-Saharan Africa devastated by the AIDS epidemic.

Stacey Martin

Aus-China Specialist

Following a career in financial services and private wealth management, Stacey Martin assists wealthy individuals and SME’s with cross-jurisdictional business opportunities including market entry, investment matching and professional connections through a range of specialist consultancies. Founder of the Expat Advisors Community for professionals with internationally connected clients, Stacey is the author of “Smooth Road to Travel: China to Australia” to assist inbound migrants and investors navigate the Australian financial services and regulatory landscape.  Stacey will also be leading a delegation of fund managers, fintec and professional services to the Asian Financial Forum in January 2017 exploring mutual opportunities with market participants across Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Anthony is a Chartered Accountant with Hanrick Curran and has over 15 years experience in advising and supporting Small to Medium size business owners. He has extensive experience in a variety of commercial industries, including how to access government grants and tax incentives. Anthony can advise on what activities could qualify a business to be entitled to the Research and Development Tax Incentive and how the Export Market Development Grant can support businesses to access international markets.

Susanne Bansgrove

A self appointed catalyst for change, Susanne’s strength lies in her diverse experience and her ability to lead groups, particularly Families in Business, through the change necessary to succeed. She is a compassionate leader with high expectations, and has the ability to build bridges between people and their perspectives, thus creating team cohesion fuelled by a clear vision. One of Susanne’s professional skills is the timeless concept of “business matchmaking” for productive and flourishing relationships.


Angela Vithoulkas

For over 25 years Angela Vithoulkas has forged a successful career in public and corporate life as an award winning business owner, radio broadcaster, media commentator and Independent Councillor for the City of Sydney. She is recognised as one of Sydney’s leading female entrepreneurs, with awards including; City of Sydney Business of the Year, Café of The Year, NSW Entrepreneur of the Year as well as 2007 Telstra Women’s Business Owner of the Year. Angela’s extensive career as a small business owner equips her with an in depth understanding of the challenges and opportunities that are an integral part of small business ownership. Since 2010 Angela has given hundreds of small business owners the opportunity to talk about their businesses and to share their knowledge through the Eagle Waves Radio network, which she established, broadcast and managed for a period of four years.
